America North 1988 -THE PLAIN DEALER, THURSDAY, JUNE 9, 1988 TV 3 lifts anchor from Miami WKYC Channel 3 News, seeking both a woman and maturity to replace retiring anchor Bob McBride. came up with both yester-. day. The station reached agreement with Jill Beach. a reporter and weekend anchor at WSVN-TV.

the NBC affiliate in Miami. She will start at Channel 3 in mid-July and will anchor the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts with Leon Bibb. WKYC News Director Paul Beavers said NBC's bureau chief in Miami first suggested Beach, who has done pieces for the "Today" show and "NBC Nightly News." "I wanted someone with maturity. solid reporting experience, plenty of anchor experience and a strong commitment to a community," Beavers said.

"She's got all that. We were very impressed with her work." Beach, 42, has spent 13 years in television news and previously worked in Baltimore. She is a Miami native who attended MiamiDade Community College and the University of Florida. Engaged to a WSVN anchor, she has two children from a marriage that ended in divorce and has most of her family in Miami. "I've really had a love affair with the community here." she said yesterday.

adding that it was the opportunity to work with Beavers "and a really good group of people in a great atmosphere" that attracted her. "I'm looking forward to it a whole lot." Still open to question at Channel 3 is the future of the low-rated 7 p.m. newscast. The latest ratings showed improvement for the station's other newscasts, amid speculation that the 7 p.m. program will be dropped in favor of earlier news, possibly at 5:30.

audience measurement figures from the May ratings "sweeps" were released by A.C. Nielsen Co. and Arbitron yesterday. The newscast was the top-rated program at noon, 6 and 11 p.m., while WEWS Channel 5's "Eyewitness News" lost ground from the February survey and WKYC Channel 3 News showed improvement. A cable channel, Turner Broadcasting's SuperStation TBS, showed up for the first time in local ratings, winning an average audience figure equal to that of WVIZ Channel 25.

Ratings from Arbitron and Nielsen, which are competing services, normally differ by several points, though rankings are generally the same. Channels 5 and 8 subscribe to Nielsen, whose figures are based on diaries kept by viewers. Channel 3, WOIO Channel 19 and WUAB Channel 43 use Arbitron, whose figures are based on "people meters" in 400 households. The "sweeps" are ratings periods on which advertising rates are based. Each rating point represents of all area households with television.

Each share point represents of those whose sets were on at the time the audience was measured. Among highlights: In the 6 p.m. news race, figures MARILYN BECK audience in both Nielsen and Arbitron figures. Nielsen showed Channel 3 the close winner at 6 a.m., followed by Channel 8. Arbitron had the opposite.

Arbitron says Channel 5's "Morning Exchange" beat Channel 3's "AM Cleveland." Arbitron said the opposite. "Oprah" on Channel 5 still dominates at 4 p.m. "Donahue" is the winner at 5 p.m., followed closely by "Live on Five." Channel 19's children's game show "Double Dare" beats or ties Channel 3 for third place at 5. Indians games on Channel 43, weeknight or weekend, drew about an average of of the audience. In prime time (8-11 p.m.), NBC programming on Channel 3 won the largest audience, followed by Channels 8 and 5 in a virtual dead heat, according to Nielsen.

From sign-on to sign-off, both Arbitron in and Nielsen said Channel 5 was the winner in average audience, followed by Channel 8, Channel 3, Channel 43 and Channel 19. I Channel 25 and TBS both Tom Feran JILL BEACH WJW news sweeps up again 7JW Channel 8's Channel 43's six-month-old "10 the big 'Newscenter winner 8" as was again TOM FERAN and O'Clock a News" respectable averaged of a the 5 rating TELEVISION were virtually unchanged from February. Channel 8 was ranked first by both services, with an 18 rating and share from Nielsen and a from Arbitron. Channel 5 was second, with a and a Channel 3 was third, with a and At 6:30 p.m., ABC's "World News Tonight with Peter Jennings" took over the lead in Nielsen and scored a virtual tie with Channel 8 in Arbitron's figures. "Family Ties" on Channel 43 took over third place at 6:30.

Channel 5's "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy" continue to draw nearly half the viewing audience and overwhelm the competition at 7 and 7:30 p.m. respectively. At 7, Arbitron says "Cheers" 011 Channel 43 is in a virtual tie for second place with "CBS Evening News" on Channel 8. Nielsen puts "Evening News" ahead. At 11 p.m., Arbitron showed Channel 8 first with a (up two share points from February), Channel 5 second with a 12,22 (down 7 share points) and Channel 3 third with a 10.18 (up one point).

Nielsen said Channel 8 was first with an Channel 5 second with and Channel 3 third with a up 4 share points. Tanen stresses that, with "Dundee IT" following in the blockbuster path of the original, "There's nothing ire'd love more than to have Paul do a third. However. his attitude has been that he'd do it once, he'd do it twice, but a third time never and there have absolutely been no conversations with him that would even hint he's having a change of heart." In my recent conversations with Hogan, he made it clear he was now a wealthy man and that there would be no reason for him to do another "Crocodile" caper.

He certainly wouldn't need it as an excuse to be with his co-star Linda Kozlowski now that his 27-year-long marriage has officially split at the seams. For the record.
