Neighborhood guide
Two hundred years ago, the site where Museumplein now lies was still occupied by farms. To create more living space, construction of the Museum Quarter began here at the start of the last century. The influence of architect Cuypers is recognizable, who, besides the first homes, also designed the Rijksmuseum in neo-Gothic style. This period is beautifully captured in "Publieke Werken" by Thomas Rosenboom. Together with the Concertgebouw in neo-Renaissance style, this building defines the character of the district.
With the arrival of the Van Gogh Museum, Gerrit Rietveld's modern architecture also came to Museumplein. The range of restaurants, cafés, and shops is as eclectic as the architectural styles and fits perfectly with the neighborhood's international allure. Haute couture connoisseurs and buyers can visit the P.C. Hooftstraat for fashion houses such as Burberry, Ba&sh, and Isabel Marant Étoile. The great thing about this neighborhood is that the City Center, De Pijp, and Amsterdam South – with Vondelpark – are all within walking distance.

Design vision
At the beginning of the 20th century, as a reaction to rationalism, a group of architects emerged who sought to express themselves more artistically. This led to the expressionist architectural style of the Amsterdam School. Central to this style is the emphasis on the external form, which is sturdy and massive. Characteristic are the ladder windows: windows divided by a large number of muntins. This architectural style is often seen in buildings originally constructed as social housing.
